I was talking with a friend yesterday about the fact that I prefer to teach myself things then to be shown how to do it. I think my brain just works better when I have to analyze everything and get to the root of how something works. I am a graphic artist but I have never taken a class to learn the graphics programs I use. I just bought the programs and started playing around. Now, I am sure that I am totally doing things wrong and missing many tips and tricks, but it makes me feel good that I am able to do as much as I can do without shelling out mega cash to take design classes.
How about you? Have you ever self-taught yourself something that you are really proud of?
Lepel
Moschino
Meltin Pot
I've taught myself the majority of the programs I use. I still like to take a class to learn some of the shortcuts I hadn't figured out, but mostly I'm better if I am self-taught.
1I taught myself piano by watching a friend play. I was a weird kid, I learned the stuff she played for her lessons by ear. Of course as she got really good I couldn't keep up, so I took lessons for three months, hated the teacher, and never touched a piano again.
2all computer applications such as excel, powerpoint, word etc. and when i have time i will do the same with photoshop.
stuff like that comes easy to me.
but if something technically goes wrong with my computer i get frustrated.
3Any computer apps - I just dink around with them until I get them figured out. It's always been pretty easy for me. I can do a bit more motorcycle maintenance/repair than the average enthusiast, but I have to have a service manual handy, or I sometimes don't know where anything is supposed to go once I get it taken apart, and then it's a big mess.
Other than that, I took piano lessons for a while but never really benefited because I can't read music to save my life. I always played everything by ear, and for my last recital, I played my own composition (though, now I can't remember a thing about it). I am thinking about attempting to teach myself to play the guitar sometime soon.
4No, but I haven't ever tried. I guess I am too lazy to try myself or sign up for a class. I can't really think of anything I want to learn to do, so maybe one day if I get the desire to do something, I will try.
OMG I just realized how pathetic that sounds
5I taught myself how to knit, and anything with computer programs I just rip through and get tips as I go along.
6How to play the flute (I already played the piano, so that made it a little easier), advanced statistics and stats programs, how to knit.
7I also taught myself to play French horn, but that doesn't really count because I already played the trumpet.
8The usual Microsoft Office programs. I'm a power point MASTER! I taught myself ACAD drafting software and Dreamweaver.
9never
10I'm not sure. I attended a school to learn to work with the Microsoft programs, but then all I learned about surfing the net I did it on my own, does that count? I am a firm believer in formal eduacation for everything. I would love being a student for life, attending a class, preparing papers, debating... ahhhh dreamy!

When I worked at my first office job at Intel (years ago) I taught myself DOS, Lotus 123, Word-Perfect, and a bunch of other programs. Now, I feel like my computer skills are completely lacking.
I really just need to play around with current programs instead of
just barely getting by with the info I have.
12OMG Word Perfect, I still remember that, I looooved those combination of keys to achieve different functions. When MS first came out I thought that it was for 'tards with one button for every task

lol, I so miss DOS. I don't remember it anymore, but I remember that God Mode in Wolfenstein was CD\Wolf3D -goobers
I kill me.
14I too learned all the computer stuff by myself. Other than that nothing
I would LOVE to teach
myself how to play the guitar though!
15No,nothing. I always took classes for everything I know.
16Yes.....I taught myself how to use the different computer programs and how to crochet.
17I taught myself how to knit too!
18I picked up Arabic from my all of in-laws. I'm pretty proud of that when someone points it out.
19I love Latin, and would love to learn it. I should really start studying.
20My older sister always used to want me to "do" her hair. I learned to make french braids without being shown. I don't know if I did them correctly, but the end result was the same.

We are quite the talented popples around here.
22Piano if that counts.. cant think of anything else at the moment
23I always preferred the self taught methods. I'm a law school student so it's not so easy because I have to be patient when learning but it works for me and actually, I'm so confident that i even skip some classes
24oh i forgot about french brains. i taught myself to french braid mine and other people's hair without being shown too!
25french *braids* not brains.
26french brains
HAHHAHAHAHA!!!
27I taught myself how to french braid my own hair too
I love typos. Except when they are my own.
28sad part is I actually TOOK A CLASS in typing.
